Whirling Dervish Ceremony

Overview

The dance-like ritual of Sema was developed by the Dervish order - followers of the 13th century religious leader Mevlana Celalladin-i Rumi. You may have heard of him as Rumi, the poet and philosopher. His philosophy of 'come as you are' was attractive to many people searching for true meaning in life. As people began to follow Mevlana they came to love the creator and his creation. This love is expressed in the dance of the Whirling Dervish. The participants turn ‘around their hearts’, from right to left, the Direction of Truth. The ritual takes the participant towards perfection and unity with God. With one hand raised to the Creator, the dancer receives, and with the other hand turned down toward the earth, they pass on the blessing to the Creation. Dervishes have been performing this ritual for close to 800 years. It has since become a cultural symbol of this incredibly diverse land of Turkey. Now you can witness this spiritual dance on your trip.
